The Project:
Having read James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," we then considered the uses of the lens through which we read, called the Reader-Response Lens. The assignment was to write an essay responding to Joyce's somewhat autobiographical "Portrait" in which you respond from your personal life as a reader. How does Joyce's work strike you, as an artist and a reader? At what point do you engage with the text---or disengage?

From his nomination:
Abram responds to Joyce's novel with the kind of gut-level intensity that makes for an intriguing juxtaposition between the reader and the work of art (the novel under consideration). His personal voice gets in touch with his drive toward artistry, showing how he engages with Joyce's text as an artistic impetus, propelling him (Abram) toward a new view of his own inspiration as an actor, singer, and artist.
